چکیده

We present an analysis of the central cusp slopes and core parameters of early-type galaxies using a large database of surface brightness profiles obtained from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We examine the relation between the central cusp slopes, core parameters, and black hole masses in early-type galaxies, in light of two models that attempt to explain the formation of cores and density cusps via the dynamical influence of black holes. Contrary to the expectations from adiabatic-growth models, we find that the cusp slopes do not steepen with increasing black hole mass fraction. Moreover, a comparison of kinematic black hole mass measurements with the masses predicted by the adiabatic models shows that they overpredict the masses by a factor of ∼3. Simulations involving binary black hole mergers predict that both the size of the core and the central mass deficit correlate with the final black hole mass. These relations are qualitatively supported by the present data. Galaxy Cores as Relics of Black Hole Mergers

We investigate the hypothesis that the cores of elliptical galaxies and bulges are created from the binding energy liberated by the coalescence of supermassive binary black holes during galaxy mergers. Assuming that the central density profiles of galaxies were initially steep power laws, ρ ∼ r, we define the “mass deficit” as the mass in stars that had to be removed from the nucleus in order t...

On the Origin of the Dichotomy of Early-Type Galaxies: The Role of Dry Mergers and AGN Feedback

Using a semi-analytical model for galaxy formation, combined with a large N -body simulation, we investigate the origin of the dichotomy among early-type galaxies. In qualitative agreement with previous studies and with numerical simulations, we find that boxy galaxies originate from mergers with a progenitor mass ratio n < 2 and with a combined cold gas mass fraction Fcold < 0.1. Our model acc...

Formation of Galactic Nuclei

We investigate a model in which galactic nuclei form via the coalescence of pre-existing stellar systems containing supermassive black holes. Merger simulations are carried out using N -body algorithms that can follow the formation and decay of a black-hole binary and its effect on the surrounding stars down to sub-parsec scales. Our initial stellar systems have steep central density cusps simi...

On the Origin of Isophotal Shapes in Elliptical Galaxies

Using semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, the origin of boxy and disky elliptical galaxies is investigated. We find that the simple scenario, motivated by N-body simulations, in which the isophotal shape is only dependent on the mass ratio of the last major merger, is not able to reproduce the observation that the fraction of boxy and disky ellipticals depends on galaxy luminosity. The ...

Gravitational Recoil from Spinning Binary Black Hole Mergers

The inspiral and merger of binary black holes will likely involve black holes with both unequal masses and arbitrary spins. The gravitational radiation emitted by these binaries will carry angular as well as linear momentum. A net flux of emitted linear momentum implies that the black hole produced by the merger will experience a recoil or kick. Previous studies have focused on the recoil veloc...
